Milwaukee mower beside cut and longer grass on a domestic lawn

For a regularly cut domestic lawn, the Einhell GE-CM 36/43 Li M is a sensible starting point: it gives you cordless mowing, a mulch insert and a collector in one manageable machine. For longer runs with powered wheels, the Hyundai HYM510SPE offers petrol power, while the Milwaukee M18 F2LM53 suits heavier cordless work.

A mulching mower earns its place when you can cut little and often. It chops the cuttings and returns them to the lawn, saving trips to empty a bag. If mowing regularly slips by a week or two, choose a machine that can collect as well. Being able to change approach is much more useful than committing to mulching every cut.

Which mulching mower suits your lawn?

Your mowing routineBest fit from this shortlist
Regular cuts on a domestic lawn; happy to pushEinhell GE-CM 36/43 Li M — 43cm cut; two batteries and chargers in the linked kit
Longer runs on a larger lawn; prefer petrol and powered wheelsHyundai HYM510SPE — 51cm cut; self-propelled with electric start
Heavier cordless mowing, with collection needed as wellMilwaukee M18 F2LM53 — 53cm cut; variable-speed drive; linked offer excludes batteries and charger

These are walk-behind mowers with both mulching and collection options. The useful differences are how much machine you want to handle, whether you need powered wheels and what is included with it. A wide self-propelled mower makes sense on open runs; it is much less appealing if every pass ends with a tight turn around a bed.

Best for regular domestic mowing: Einhell GE-CM 36/43 Li M

The Einhell is the easiest starting point here for a homeowner who wants to stop collecting every cut without moving to a large, heavy mower. Its 43cm width covers a useful strip while remaining easier to work around borders than the two wider machines below. It is a push mower, so choose it where you are comfortable supplying the forward movement yourself.

The linked 3413240 kit includes two 4Ah Power X-Change batteries, two chargers and the mulching wedge. Both batteries power the mower together; the second one is not a spare to swap in halfway through. Keeping the pair charged together makes the next cut straightforward.

It suits a lawn kept under control. The even cut and manageable handling make regular mowing pleasant, but I would use its collection box for a substantial catch-up cut. Einhell’s manual specifically limits mulching to relatively short grass. Feeding it a heavy mass of cuttings will make the job harder and leave more material to deal with on the surface.

Already owning Power X-Change tools can make the battery system attractive, though this particular link is for a complete kit. Compare the contents with any mower-only offer before ordering.

Best for larger lawns with petrol power: Hyundai HYM510SPE

Choose the Hyundai when the lawn gives you long, open runs and you want self-propelled drive without planning battery charging around the job. Its 51cm cut reduces the number of passes compared with the Einhell, and the powered wheels take much of the pushing out of a larger lawn.

The HYM510SPE has electric start with recoil backup and a choice of walking speeds. Those are useful conveniences if repeated pull-starting or keeping pace with a fixed-speed mower puts you off petrol. You still have an engine to fuel and maintain, and a substantial machine to turn, move through gates and store.

Mulching is one of its cutting options, alongside collection and discharge. The 70-litre collector is useful when growth has got ahead of you or the clippings are too damp to leave neatly. A full bag adds weight, so empty it before it becomes awkward to handle.

This is a better fit for open lawn than a small garden broken up by steps and narrow passages. Measure the actual access width before buying: the cutting width describes the blade’s working strip, not the widest part of the mower. If petrol storage and servicing would be a nuisance, the cordless options deserve the closer look.

Best for heavier cordless work: Milwaukee M18 F2LM53

The Milwaukee suits a busy mowing routine where pace, strong collection and the ability to tackle thicker growth all matter. Its variable-speed drive is particularly useful when you need to slow down through a heavier patch, then pick up the pace on an open run.

The 53cm steel deck, mulch plug, collection bag and rear-side discharge chute give it flexibility across different jobs. It bags well and handles long, overgrown grass strongly. That makes it useful when you want to mulch regular cuts but still need a capable collector after a spell of missed mowing.

For a compact lawn with short runs, its size and the cost of the battery setup are harder to justify. The linked Tooled-Up offer is body only. It includes the grass-management attachments, but you need two suitable M18 batteries and charging equipment. Small batteries from a drill kit may fit the system without providing the mowing time you want.

Choose a roller mower instead if a pronounced striped finish is your priority. For the detail on handling, collection and battery use through a working day, the Milwaukee M18 F2LM53 review explains where it works well.

Will mulching fit the way you actually mow?

Think about the weeks when the lawn grows fastest. If you can keep taking a small amount off, mulching can remove a tedious part of the job: stopping, carrying a full bag to the collection point and restarting. If the lawn regularly becomes long before you get to it, you will spend more time collecting or dealing with clumps.

Mulching keeps cuttings under the deck long enough to chop them finely before they settle back into the grass. Side discharge releases them through an outlet and can leave longer pieces on the surface. Simply taking the bag off a collection mower does not create a proper mulching setup. Use the blade, plug and flap arrangement specified for that exact machine.

Fine clippings return some nutrients as they break down. Judge the result by the lawn in front of you: the grass should remain visible, with small fragments working down between the blades. A line of wet clippings lying on top needs collecting, and another pass is only sensible when the ground is firm enough.

In autumn, a mower that can collect remains useful as damp conditions and fallen leaves become more common. For leaf-heavy lawns, see when fallen leaves can be chopped and when to clear them. A deep, wet covering is a collection job.

Get a clean finish without leaving clumps

Start with dry grass and a firm surface. Set an appropriate cutting height, take a modest amount off and reduce your walking speed if the mower is struggling to process the growth. The RHS mowing guidance explains why dry conditions and removing no more than roughly a third of the grass height help.

For the first cut after the lawn has become long, collect at a higher setting and return to regular mulching once growth is manageable. Do not keep lowering the deck to hide the clippings: that leaves the lawn shorter while asking the mower to process even more grass.

Keep the deck clear and the blade in good condition, following the mower’s instructions. Before changing attachments or clearing anything, stop the machine, wait for the blade to stop and isolate its power source as directed in the manual. Cleaning and safe access underneath differ between petrol and cordless machines.

If the lawn has recently had a treatment, follow its label’s instructions for mowing and clippings. Some products restrict where cuttings can be used. For a workable mowing routine through the growing season, use the UK mowing-frequency guide.

If the mower still leaves clumps when you switch to the bag, work through these checks for a mower that is not collecting grass before deciding the machine needs replacing.

Check the complete mower before buying

Confirm that the exact model includes a mulching function and the necessary insert or kit. Similar-looking variants can have different equipment. For a cordless mower, count the batteries needed to run it and check the charger provision; for petrol, allow space for safe fuel storage and routine servicing.

Then check your narrowest gate, the turns at the end of the lawn and how you will get the mower into storage. Self-propelled drive helps while mowing, but you still have to manoeuvre the machine when it is switched off.

If you are still deciding whether mulching, collection or a roller finish matters most, the main lawn mower buying guide covers the wider choices.
