A petrol scarifier makes sense when you have enough lawn to justify bringing out a substantial machine. The difference you notice is not just how much it lifts from the grass: it is getting it onto the lawn, clearing the debris and putting it away afterwards.
I bought the Hyundai HYSC210 for larger renovation work before reseeding. It pulled out a substantial amount of dead material, and I worked in stages with the depth adjusted carefully. The machine did the job I wanted, but I also had to plan for its weight, noise and the material left to clear.
I would put the Hyundai on the shortlist for repeated, sizeable renovations. The STIHL RL 540 is another route where its handling and a useful local servicing arrangement suit you. Here is how I compare the complete job, rather than engine size alone.

When the Hyundai HYSC210 makes sense
Once the HYSC210 was unpacked, assembly and starting were straightforward, and the wheels made it easier to move. I adjusted the depth in stages rather than trying to strip everything in one pass. That measured approach matters more to the result than a larger engine figure.
The HYSC210 offers a wider working strip and a package that Hyundai lists with a collector and aerator attachment. That makes it worth pricing as a complete set rather than comparing a bare machine against a bundle. If you would buy those accessories anyway, their inclusion affects the total cost.
Its 2cm width advantage is modest. On paper, 40cm is about 5% wider than 38cm, but overlap, turns and emptying the catcher can easily matter more than that difference. Do not buy it expecting a reliably measured 5% reduction in working time.
Also think about moving it when the engine is off. Thirty-seven kilograms is a substantial machine to lift across a step or load into a vehicle. A folding handle helps storage, but does not remove the weight. Check the route from shed to lawn before ordering.
When the STIHL RL 540 makes sense
The RL 540’s published weight is lower, which is relevant if handling is a deciding factor. Its narrower working width may also suit access or manoeuvring preferences. Those figures support a practical comparison; they do not prove it is easier for every person to push or turn.
Consider the service arrangement available to you. If a nearby dealer can maintain the machine and source parts, that may be worth paying for over several seasons. Ask about turnaround times, collection and warranty support rather than assuming that a brand name guarantees a particular service.
Confirm whether a catcher is included in the offer you are considering. A machine price without a required accessory is not the same purchase as a complete package.
Budget time for what comes out
A collector looks convenient in a specification table, but a thatchy lawn can produce more material than you expect. Think about where you will empty it and how you will remove the debris from the garden. The working time includes those trips and the clean-up, not just the forward passes.
That is one reason I would not buy around the small difference in working width. A clear route for moving the machine and a sensible place for the waste can matter more than a couple of centimetres at the front.
Decide what follows scarifying too. If the lawn needs overseeding, make sure you can prepare, sow and water it while conditions suit the work. Owning the machine lets you choose the day, but it does not make every day a good day to renovate.
For a smaller lawn used occasionally, compare a suitable electric machine and a complete hire quote before committing to petrol. For regular larger work, the HYSC210 has practical appeal, provided you can manage the machine and the clear-up around it.
Before buying either: do you need petrol?
For a small lawn and occasional use, an electric machine or hiring equipment may be a better use of money. Ownership adds storage, maintenance and fuel handling to the job. Our electric vs petrol scarifier guide explains that first decision.
If the lawn’s main problem is compacted soil, do not assume a scarifier’s “aerator” attachment replaces hollow-tine aeration. These are different jobs. Read the difference between renovation, aeration and scarification before paying for the wrong solution.
Five checks that can change the better buy
- Full delivered cost: machine, collector, attachments, delivery and any required consumables.
- Intended use: check domestic and commercial warranty terms separately.
- Access: gates, steps, folded storage space and safe lifting arrangements.
- Parts and service: replacement blades, belts, catcher and local maintenance.
- Lawn recovery: leave time and budget for debris removal, overseeding and watering where needed.
Common questions
Does the larger Hyundai engine prove better scarifying?
No. Engine displacement is a specification, not a test of removal quality or finish. Working depth, blade condition and lawn conditions affect the job, and maximum depth is not the correct setting for every lawn.
Which would we choose?
For an occasional owner comparing a complete, competitively priced package, the HYSC210 is the logical first offer to check. For someone who values the lower published weight and has a useful STIHL service arrangement, the RL 540 deserves a closer look. If you cannot store or safely handle either, choose another approach.
