If your lawn only needs an occasional scarify, hiring may save you the expense and storage space of owning a petrol machine. But a cheap day rate can lose its appeal when collection, the work itself and returning the machine all have to fit around one booked day.
I’ve used the Hyundai HYSC210 for larger renovation work. Having a machine ready when the lawn and weather are right is useful, but this is a heavy tool to move, maintain and store. I wouldn’t buy it simply because the price resembles a few headline hire rates.
Let’s compare the full cost and the practical work so you can choose the option that fits your lawn. If you’re pricing a different machine, the STIHL RL540 specification and SGS scarifier range give you other purchase options to check against the same hire quote.

ToggleCount necessary treatments, not spare weekends
Start by inspecting the lawn. Scarifying removes thatch and other material from around the base of the grass; it is not the same job as removing soil cores to relieve compaction. Buying a scarifier does not create a reason to scarify every few weeks.
RHS autumn-care guidance makes clear that a lawn does not necessarily need every renovation treatment every year. If your realistic requirement is one occasional renovation, calculate on that basis. Counting unnecessary sessions makes ownership look cheap while exposing the lawn to needless damage.
Plan the day backwards from the return time. You may need to mow first, make the passes the lawn actually needs, clear the surprisingly bulky debris, clean the machine and get it back. If collection eats the morning, a short hire can make good work feel rushed. That is a reason to price a longer booking, not to rush a pass across wet ground.
Compare complete hire quotes
The headline daily rate may not be the amount you pay. Ask for the required period, VAT, delivery and collection, any damage waiver, consumables and late-return terms. A refundable deposit affects cash tied up, but is not a cost if returned in full. Keep it separate in your comparison.
HSS’s listed petrol scarifier weighs 63kg and has a 38cm working strip; its page says a vehicle at least the size of a truck is needed for collection. The machine supplied may differ from the image. Confirm the actual equipment, loading arrangement and dimensions rather than assuming it will fit a hatchback with the seats down.
Also check the cancellation or postponement terms. A paid booking is not a reason to work on a waterlogged, frozen or drought-stressed lawn. Being able to choose a suitable day has value, but put that advantage alongside the costs instead of treating it as unlimited savings.
A five-year example you can replace with your own figures
The figures below are illustrative assumptions, not retailer prices or forecasts. They show the arithmetic: purchase £500, resale after five years £150, maintenance allowance £40 a year, £10 of ownership-only variable costs per session, and an all-in hire cost of £90 per equivalent session. Treat ordinary job costs that are equal under both choices consistently; do not count them twice.
Five-year fixed ownership cost is £500 − £150 + (5 × £40) = £550. Each session then adds £10. Hire adds £90 per session. The saving per session from owning is £80, so the crossover is £550 ÷ £80 = 6.875: ownership becomes cheaper at the seventh session within those five years.
| Sessions in five years | Hire: £90 × sessions | Own: £550 + £10 × sessions |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | £270 | £580 |
| 5 | £450 | £600 |
| 7 | £630 | £620 |
| 10 | £900 | £650 |
The seven-session result is not a recommendation to scarify seven times. It is a financial threshold under these assumptions. A once-a-year lawn generates five sessions in five years, so hire is cheaper in this example. Two genuinely necessary sessions each year would change the result, but the lawn condition must justify them.
The variables that can reverse the answer
Resale value. Set it to zero as a cautious second calculation. The fixed ownership cost becomes £700 and the crossover moves to nine sessions. Selling is not guaranteed, and a damaged or neglected machine may be worth much less than hoped.
Delivery. A local collection option can lower hire costs, while repeated delivery charges can raise them. Compare the full quote for the same working period. Repairs. A maintenance allowance is not insurance against a major repair; inspect parts availability and servicing requirements.
Time horizon. Keeping a machine ten years spreads the purchase differently, but also changes maintenance, repair and resale assumptions. Do not stretch the ownership period merely to force a favourable result. If a house move is likely, storage and future lawn size deserve a realistic estimate.
Compare machines you can actually handle
Using the Hyundai HYSC210 has made the handling side of this decision very real to me. Its delivery box was heavy, but assembly and starting were manageable, and the wheels helped once the machine was out and working. It lifted dead material ahead of reseeding across larger lawns, with the expected noise, petrol upkeep and storage needs. I would buy for repeated renovation work only if I had room and use for it; for an occasional small lawn, the complete hire quote may still make better sense.
| Option | Published specification | Buying or booking check |
|---|---|---|
| Hyundai HYSC210 | 40cm working width; 37kg net; 45L collector supplied | Allow for handling, storage and emptying; check delivered kit |
| STIHL RL540 | 38cm working width; petrol scarifier | Confirm collector/accessories and local support in the quotation |
| HSS petrol hire scarifier | 38cm strip; listed 63kg; collector | Confirm actual supplied model, delivery and loading |
The HYSC210 is substantially lighter on its published net figure than the listed HSS machine, but those figures do not measure cutting performance. Nor does the nominal collector capacity predict how often it will need emptying on your lawn. Thatch condition and working depth can dominate the job.
The RL540 is another ownership route to price up, particularly where a nearby dealer offers practical parts and servicing support. Include the accessories you want in the purchase figure. A bare-machine price compared with a hire machine and collector is an uneven comparison.
For a small lawn with safe access to electricity, a corded machine may change the sums considerably. Read our electric versus petrol scarifier comparison before assuming that a petrol purchase is the only alternative to hiring. Our electric scarifier guide covers that narrower choice.
Make the choice with four numbers and one practical check
Write down the delivered purchase price, realistic end value, maintenance allowance and complete hire quote. Then estimate how many necessary sessions you expect within the chosen period. If ownership only wins with an optimistic resale price or treatments your lawn does not need, hire is the stronger starting point.
If the numbers favour buying, measure the storage route before ordering. Steps, narrow gates and a crowded shed can outweigh a modest saving. A machine that is awkward to retrieve is less likely to be used on the right day.
Next step: get the hire quote, then check the HYSC210 purchase option and check the RL540 specification for a dealer quote. You can also compare current SGS scarifiers; check the exact working width and supplied accessories. Compare the full cost for your lawn. The cheapest machine on paper is not always the cheapest workable arrangement.
