Choose the Bosch UniversalVerticut 1100 if you want a compact electric scarifier for removing thatch, with a larger collection box. Choose the Einhell GC-SA 1231/1 if you want to swap between a blade roller for scarifying and a spring-tine roller for lighter raking. The roller arrangement is a much more useful difference than the extra 100 watts on the Einhell label.
Both suit domestic lawn renovation where a mains cable can reach safely. The Einhell GC-SA 1231/1 UK model offers the broader set of jobs in one machine; the Bosch is a straightforward choice when scarifying is the main task.

ToggleThe differences that matter on the lawn
| Feature | Bosch | Einhell |
|---|---|---|
| Working width | 32 cm | 31 cm |
| Motor rating | 1,100 W | 1,200 W |
| Working parts | Pivoting blades | Blades or spring tines |
| Collection box | 50 litres | 28 litres |
| Height adjustment | Four settings: +5, 0, −5 and −10 mm | Three working depths plus transport position |
The one-centimetre width difference is unlikely to decide a domestic job. Collection, turning space, the thickness of the thatch and getting the machine to the lawn will be more noticeable. A bigger collector helps, but dense thatch can fill either machine quickly.
The specifications above are for the UniversalVerticut 1100 and the UK GC-SA 1231/1. Bosch also sells the UniversalRake 900, and older Einhell GC-SA 1231 listings still appear. Keep the exact model name in view when comparing offers, especially if a marketplace groups several machines together.
Best for dedicated scarifying: Bosch UniversalVerticut 1100
The Bosch is a useful size for a domestic lawn with corners and obstacles. Its 32 cm width keeps it manageable, while the 50-litre box gives you more collection space than the Einhell. That combination suits an occasional renovation machine which spends much of the year stored away.
Its pivoting blades work into the layer of dead material around the base of the grass. Start lightly and inspect a small area before making a complete pass. A deeper setting is useful only when the lawn needs it and can recover afterwards; digging harder into an already thin lawn creates more repair work.
The UniversalVerticut does not come with an interchangeable spring-tine rake roller. If gentle raking is a major reason for buying, the Einhell’s two rollers are a practical advantage. Bosch’s UniversalRake is a different machine.
The Amazon listing for the UniversalVerticut 1100 is currently unavailable. If you need a machine for an upcoming job, view the Einhell GC-SA 1231/1 UK model on Amazon. Do not substitute the UniversalRake 900 if you need scarifying blades.
Best for scarifying and lighter raking: Einhell GC-SA 1231/1
The Einhell makes more sense when you want one stored machine for two types of work. Use its blade roller for thatch removal and switch to the spring-tine roller for a lighter pass through loose moss and surface debris. The spring tines are useful when cutting into the lawn would be more disturbance than the job needs.
The smaller 28-litre collector is the main compromise. On a mossy lawn, stop before the box becomes packed and restricts collection. Allow time for handling the waste as well as walking the machine over the grass. For a small garden, the flexibility can be worth those extra stops.
Although retailers often call this an aerator, neither supplied roller removes plugs of soil like a hollow-tine aerator. If compacted soil is the problem, use the lawn aerator guide to choose a tool that addresses the soil itself.
Collection and clearing up can take longer than you expect
Scarifying can pull an astonishing volume of material out of a lawn that looked fairly tidy beforehand. Plan where it will go before you begin. On heavy thatch, a larger box still needs frequent emptying, so a collection bag or wheelbarrow close to the working area saves unnecessary trips.

If the machine’s instructions allow working without its collector, you can gather the lifted material separately with a rake. Keep the required guards in place. The advantage is fewer interruptions during the pass; the trade-off is a separate clearing job before any seed goes down.
Stop and unplug before clearing a blockage or changing rollers. Work away from the power supply with the cable kept behind you and out of the cutting path, using a suitable outdoor supply protected by an RCD. Follow the machine’s cable and operating instructions.
Choose the roller and timing before the depth
For loose moss and light surface debris, start with a raking pass. For a built-up thatch layer, use blades. The scarifier roller guide explains how to recognise the difference and choose the amount of disturbance the lawn needs.
Carry out substantial scarifying while grass is growing strongly and has time to recover. Spring or early autumn often provides that opportunity, with the exact timing led by soil moisture and weather. Avoid a hard renovation immediately before drought, frost or prolonged wet conditions.
After clearing the debris, look at the gaps before deciding how much seed to buy. A lawn opened up by scarifying often benefits from overseeding, but thick surviving grass does not need the same sowing rate as bare soil. The overseeding guide takes you through that stage.
Which one would I choose?
For an ordinary domestic garden needing both occasional scarifying and lighter moss raking, the Einhell GC-SA 1231/1 is the more flexible purchase. If you already have a way to rake the lawn and mainly want a compact blade scarifier, the Bosch’s larger collector is useful.
For a much larger job, awkward cable access or repeated heavy renovation, compare the wider scarifier shortlist before committing to either. Access to the lawn and clearing up afterwards matter just as much as the cutting pass.
