Fitted grey garden furniture cover on a patio after rain

A furniture cover is most useful when it is easy enough to put on that you actually use it. If it needs stretching over every corner or leaves a sagging pocket above the table, the fit is working against you before the rain starts.

I have been pleased with a VonHaus rectangular cover over my table and chairs. It feels more substantial than thinner covers I have used, and I can secure it without pulling the corners tight. I still check that rain can run off and let the furniture air when conditions allow.

Choose the shape and size for the arrangement you really store. The fastening and water-shedding details matter more than a “heavy duty” label on its own.

VonHaus rectangular set cover: for larger arrangements

The rectangular cover is the one I would look at for a measured dining set that needs one easy cover. I fasten mine before poor weather and check that the middle is supported so water can run off. A cover that fits without stretching is much easier to use regularly.

The VonHaus manufacturer specification for SKU 2500122 gives dimensions of 250 × 200 × 85cm. Match that SKU to the seller’s selected variant. VonHaus describes 420D Oxford fabric with a PVC lining, ventilation and adjustable fastenings. Those features make it worth shortlisting for a compatible rectangular arrangement, rather than draping a bench-shaped cover over a dining set.

The important trade-off is spare fabric. If your arrangement is much smaller, excess material can create pockets of standing water and more fabric for wind to catch. Choose a closer-fitting size where available, while leaving the clearance recommended by the maker.

Choosing a cover for a compact square footprint

For cube furniture, start with the measured stored footprint, height and fastening arrangement. A square table does not necessarily make a square covered footprint once the chairs are tucked around it. Choose the exact cover size that allows the maker’s intended fastening and water-shedding arrangement.

Do not rely on “cube set” in the product name. Chairs that slide beneath a table can still protrude at the back, and some sets are taller than expected. Measure the entire stored arrangement, then inspect the variant and fastening layout on the listing.

Check the warranty terms for standing water and extreme weather rather than relying on the headline claims.

VonHaus three-seat bench cover: for a shaped bench

A bench cover follows a different profile from a flat-topped table cover. The Amazon listing gives 160cm width, 70cm depth and 88cm height. VonHaus’s own page also describes a shaped front/back height profile, so inspect the measurement diagram rather than assuming one height applies across the whole cover.

Measure arms, backrest and seat depth. A bench sold as “three-seater” can be wider or deeper than another three-seater. Check the exact dimensions and leave the maker’s recommended clearance before buying.

Measure the arrangement you will actually cover

Put the chairs where they will stay between uses, then measure the whole arrangement. Chair backs and arms can stick out beyond the table, while a bench has a different front-to-back profile from a box-shaped dining set.

Think about your routine too. If you use one chair regularly, a single large cover may mean uncovering the whole set each time. Separate covers can be more convenient even when one big sheet initially looks simpler.

With the cover in place, look for low pockets where rain can collect. Follow the maker’s support and ventilation guidance so the fabric can shed water. Buying extra width “just in case” can leave more loose fabric to hold water or catch the wind.

A shaped VonHaus cover has worked well for my two-seat bench. The linked three-seat version is a different size, so seat-count labels are not a measurement. Compare width, depth and the height profile of the size you select.

What matters more than fabric thickness alone?

  • Fit: too tight strains the cover; too loose leaves flapping fabric and rain pockets.
  • Fastenings: look for a layout that can attach to your actual furniture, following the instructions.
  • Vents: ventilation helps manage moisture, but does not prove condensation can never occur.
  • Seams and coating: check the construction and care guidance as well as the fabric label.
  • Handling: consider lifting, folding, cleaning and storing the cover through the season.

A denier number describes yarn size. It is not, by itself, a comparative test of waterproofing, coating durability or seam quality.

How to use a cover through a UK winter

Check the furniture manufacturer’s care instructions before buying a cover. Some furniture should not be covered: Kettler advises against covering its mesh furniture. Where covering is permitted, clean and dry the furniture first. Fit and secure the cover according to its instructions, keep vents clear and inspect it periodically. Where the maker recommends a support to shed water, use a suitable arrangement rather than leaving a sagging pocket on the table.

Air the furniture when conditions allow and check for trapped damp. Do not assume a cover permits wet cushions to remain outdoors indefinitely: follow the cushion maker’s advice and store them dry where required. See winter cushion storage and damp checks before choosing a container. Our garden storage box guide can help with separate cushion-storage options.

“Waterproof” and “weather resistant” are not promises that every storm, pooling-water scenario or winter storage arrangement is covered by the warranty. Read exclusions before ordering, particularly for an exposed site.

Should a furniture cover reach the ground?

Follow the product’s fitting instructions. Do not deliberately buy an oversized cover that trails in standing water or prevents the intended ventilation. Height and fastening position matter alongside length and width.

Is one cover better than covering items separately?

One cover can be simpler when the stored arrangement fits it well. Separate covers may make more sense if furniture is spread out or you regularly use one item. Compare the convenience and total cost for your actual arrangement, rather than assuming the largest sheet is the cheapest useful solution.
