Robot Mower for a Small Garden? Six Checks Before Buying

Unbranded robot mower on a small garden lawn beside a narrow path and charging dock

If you’d love a neat lawn without spending your weekends pushing a mower, a robotic mower can be a game-changer. I maintain several lawns around Formby, and I’m seeing more people  introduce robot mowers.

How robot mowers actually keep a lawn tidy

  • Little and often: They cut daily or every few days, so clippings are tiny and feed the lawn as mulch.

  • Boundary wire or camera: Most UK models still use a boundary wire you peg around the lawn; newer “vision” models use cameras/sensors.

  • Charging dock: They return to charge automatically—usually living under a small “garage” or in a sheltered corner.

Pro tip: If you’ve got a bumpy or mossy lawn, plan an early season aeration + moss treatment before installing. It helps the mower avoid scalping and keeps cut quality consistent. (If you’re local, see my Lawn Care page.)

My hands-on buying guide (what actually matters)

  1. Lawn size & complexity
Choose a model rated slightly above your lawn’s area. If you’re 260 m², a “300 m²” spec is safer than a 250. Narrow side returns, paths, and trees add complexity.

  2. Edges & pathways
If your lawn edges meet paving at the same level, you’ll get a cleaner finish. Raised timber edges leave a small uncut strip—budget 5–10 mins of touch-up trimming.

  3. Uneven ground
Most robots handle gentle undulations. For rutted lawns, schedule scarification/aeration then re-level low spots with a light top-dress before installation.

  4. Connectivity & app features
Bluetooth is fine for most; Wi-Fi/4G helps if the dock is far from the house. Look for easy schedule editing, “spot cut,” and rain settings.

  5. Noise & neighbours
Robots are very quiet (often in the high-50s dB). You can run early morning without annoying anyone—handy in warm spells.

Installation in an afternoon (my field process)

  1. Sketch the lawn (include beds/trees/paths).

  2. Mow once with your normal mower (shorter cut helps wire sit neatly).

  3. Lay the boundary wire 5–10 cm inside the edge; peg every ~70 cm; add extra pegs on curves.

  4. Create islands around beds/trees.

  5. Position the dock on level ground with the recommended straight “run-in”.

  6. Test & tweak: run a manual cycle, nudge wire on corners if the mower hesitates.

  7. Bonus: add a robot mower garage for weather protection and battery longevity. [Insert Amazon garage link] Amazon UK

Useful accessories that increase basket size (and user happiness)

  • Robot mower garage (universal or model-specific) — tidy, protects from rain/UV. [Insert Amazon link] Amazon UK

  • Boundary wire & heavy-duty pegs — for extensions or fixes later in the season. [Insert Amazon link]

  • Spare blades — swap monthly for a cleaner cut; reduces browning tips. [Insert Amazon link]

  • Replacement batteries (where applicable) — for older models needing a refresh. [Insert Amazon link] Amazon UK+1

When a robot mower isn’t the right answer

  • Steep banks, many tiny disconnected lawns, or very rough, rooty turf.
In these cases, a cordless mower + fortnightly pro cut is simpler. (Locals: see my Garden Maintenance page.) (link to your Garden Maintenance page)

FAQs

Will a robot mower handle wet UK weather?
Yes—most are weather-resistant. I still avoid running during a soak to prevent smearing. Use the app’s rain delay if you’ve got one.

Do I still need to edge?
Usually yes. Robots can’t trim the final 3–8 cm along raised borders. A quick snip with long-handled shears every fortnight is plenty. (Nice cross-sell: link your “6 Essential Tools” post.) Formby Gardener

What about pets and kids?
They’re designed to be safe (lift/tilt sensors). I schedule daytime cuts when gardens are empty.

How often should it run?
Little-and-often is best—daily in spring, taper to every 2–3 days mid-summer.
