12.5mm or 19mm Garden Hose? Check Flow Before Buying

Two different diameter garden hoses coiled on a patio near an outdoor tap

If the sprinkler looks weak at the far end of your garden, a wider hose may help. I’d do a quick bucket check before buying one, though. A kink, restrictive fitting or slow tap can leave you disappointed after a hose upgrade.

I use a 12.5mm Hozelock Ultimate for ordinary watering and have used the wider 19mm Ultraflex on a longer run. The wider hose can help where delivery matters, but it takes more room to pull around and store. I’ll show you how to check whether the hose is the restriction.

Do a bucket test before buying

Time a known-size bucket at the tap, then repeat at the end of the fully uncoiled hose with the spray attachment removed. Keep other water use similar for both readings. For a 10-litre bucket, 30 seconds means 20 litres a minute; 60 seconds means 10. Repeat a doubtful result. If flow is already slow at the tap, check the supply; if the loss appears along the run, inspect bends, connectors, leaks and excess length. Then try the intended sprinkler or nozzle: open-end flow alone doesn’t guarantee the attachment will perform as hoped.

The diameter decision in one table

Situation Usually better starting point Reason to reconsider
Hand watering a compact garden 12.5mm hose A longer-than-expected route or slow filling at the far end
Long run to a sprinkler or allotment tap 19mm hose Bulkier hose, larger compatible end fittings and storage space
Tap already gives a weak flow Measure first A wider hose cannot create supply pressure
Existing reel and quick connectors Check their diameter rating Some fittings are for 12.5–15mm, others fit 19mm

Why a wider hose can help, but cannot guarantee a particular flow

Diameter is the inside bore. Over a long run, the narrower hose can lose more delivery to friction, but the tap, fittings, length and outlet all matter. The 19mm bore has more area than the 12.5mm bore; that does not mean you will receive a fixed multiple of water at the sprinkler. Use the bucket result and the job you need it for, not a geometry figure, to decide.

Choose by task and route, not diameter alone

The Hozelock Ultimate 12.5mm hose I use feels heavier than a cheap hose, but it has stayed usable over years of regular watering. My 19mm Ultraflex gives a good supply over a longer reach, though it still kinks if I drag a loose coil too quickly. Its correctly sized Hozelock connector has held without the small leaks I had with cheaper fittings. I would buy the wider setup for a long run or sprinkler that can use the flow; for everyday watering and easier handling, the 12.5mm hose is often the simpler choice.

Measure from tap to the furthest bed along the route the hose will actually take around corners. Buying a great deal of spare length adds drag, storage bulk and another opportunity for pressure loss. A small lawn watered with a handheld nozzle may be comfortable with 12.5mm. A long run to a sprinkler deserves a closer look at 19mm, especially if the bucket test shows a sizeable drop. See our lawn watering guide before choosing the sprinkler’s coverage.

For an everyday hose, the Hozelock Ultimate 12.5mm × 30m is one 12.5mm option. For a wider-bore run, the Hozelock Ultraflex 19mm × 25m is one 19mm option. These are different lengths and ranges, so compare them as suitable examples rather than a controlled performance contest. Manufacturer specifications and the exact listing variant should be checked at checkout.

Fittings catch: check the bore range on both hose-end connectors. Hozelock lists separate connector sizes for smaller and 19mm hoses; this 19mm Hozelock Connector Plus listing illustrates the larger size. A nominal 3/4-inch tap thread is not the same specification as a 3/4-inch hose bore.

When to keep the hose you have

If it reaches comfortably and fills a bucket quickly enough, changing diameter may bring little practical benefit. First straighten tight bends, uncoil the full length and inspect washers and hose ends for leaks. For automated watering, the layout, timer and emitters are separate decisions; our automatic garden watering guide covers those choices.
