When assessing bare patches on customers’ lawns in autumn, I check the soil, the forecast and whether the repair can stay out of use while it establishes.
Yes, you can repair bare lawn patches in autumn while the soil is workable and warm enough for your chosen seed to establish. As temperatures fall, a seed mixture suited to cooler conditions can help. It still needs a prepared surface, steady moisture and protection; frozen or waterlogged ground is a reason to wait.

ToggleIs it too late to repair the patches?
Early autumn usually gives you more room to work than the end of the season. By October, I would judge each patch individually: a sheltered, free-draining spot has a better chance of success than a cold, shaded corner that stays wet. If the ground is soft enough to leave deep footprints, then it’s probably best leaving the repair until conditions improve.
My practical approach is to give the seed a comfortable growing window. Hurrells’ winter-active range can germinate and grow at temperatures as low as 5°C. If temperatures are close to that limit and falling though, I would probably wait for a warmer spell before stripping out an otherwise serviceable lawn.
The RHS October lawn guidance still allows for sowing in warmer UK regions, although for cooler locations it may be getting too late. For the wider seasonal picture, see my guide to when to sow grass seed.
Three checks before opening the bag
- Can you prepare the surface without making a mess? Soil that smears under a rake or holds water around your footprints needs time to drain. Seed choice won’t repair the underlying drainage problem.
- Can the patch stay out of use? The route to the shed, washing line or dog’s favourite corner needs a temporary alternative. A hardwearing grass still starts life as a vulnerable seedling.
- Is the forecast helpful? Gentle rain can ease watering. Heavy rain can move loose seed and soil into the lowest part of the patch. If a downpour is due, I’d keep the seed dry and sow afterwards when the surface is workable.
Here in Formby, a free-draining sandy garden brings a different problem: the surface can dry while the soil underneath still feels damp. Check the shallow layer where the seed sits, especially on an exposed patch. Autumn weather doesn’t remove the need to pay attention to moisture.
Which grass seed helps when the weather turns cooler?
For smaller cool-weather repairs where wear matters, I’d lean towards Hurrells Coldstart. For a mixed-species lawn where appearance matters alongside everyday use, Four Seasons is the blend I’d consider. The important difference is how much of each mixture is winter-active. Neither makes a frozen or waterlogged seedbed a sensible place to sow.
I’ve used Coldstart in cooler conditions than I’d normally choose for lawn work. It helped improve bare, thin areas, with proper preparation and moisture.
Coldstart is a blend of winter-active seed types. I’d choose it for a lawn that needs to cope with family use once established, particularly where the immediate job is repairing wear rather than recreating a fine ornamental finish.
Four Seasons is for a more decorative domestic lawn but is only partly winter-active, so don’t expect every component to respond equally in cold soil.
Think about the grass you’re joining onto. A repair can grow successfully and still stand out because its colour or leaf texture differs from the surrounding lawn. For a prominent front lawn, that matters more than it does in a worn corner of the back garden. If you’re happy with your existing lawn’s appearance, check its original seed mixture before changing it simply because the season has moved on.

Keep a late repair small enough to look after
For scattered worn areas, I would work on those areas first. There is no need to turn a few bare patches into a full scarifying project just because you’ve bought a bag of seed. Keeping healthy grass around a repair also leaves less bare ground for you to manage.
Remove loose dead growth and lightly rake the surface to expose a fine seedbed. Sow at the mixture’s recommended rate, lightly rake the seed into the surface, then water gently if needed. Aim for even contact and a moist surface, without puddles or a thick blanket of material over the seed.
The first green shoots aren’t the finish line

Keep the repair out of use while the young grass establishes. With a mixed blend, the quickest seedlings may appear while other components are still germinating; adding more seed immediately can overcrowd the patch.
Clear fallen leaves gently before they build into a wet mat, maintain moisture during dry spells and keep feet off soft ground. Let the grass establish before its first light cut using a sharp blade. If you turn sharply on a tender repair, you can undo good progress in a moment.
Choose Coldstart when a winter-active ryegrass repair is necessary and your priority is quick repair, or Four Seasons when the mixed lawn blend is required for a more ornamental finish.
