Can You Store Garden Cushions Outside in Winter? Damp and Box Checks

If you are putting the garden away for winter, the cushions deserve a separate plan from the table and chairs. A cover or storage box can keep ordinary rain off, but the filling still needs to be dry and the storage conditions right for the cushions you own.

I use a Keter Marvel+ box for cushions and garden toys. It went together easily and has kept the contents dry through heavy rain in normal use. That is useful everyday storage; for months over winter, start with the cushion maker’s care instructions and choose suitable dry space if that is what they require.

Here is how I check the cushions, the box and the storage location before packing everything away.

Weather-resistant furniture and winter cushion storage are different

A cushion sold for outdoor furniture may tolerate an occasional shower without being intended for months in a cold storage box. Fabric, seams, liners and filling all matter. “Outdoor” describes its intended use; the care label tells you how to look after it.

Kettler’s care advice recommends dry storage for cushions when not in use. Its Cora Rope care instructions also specify dry ambient winter storage for weatherproof cushions. That is useful evidence of why the cushion’s own instructions take priority over the furniture or box description. Other brands and ranges may differ.

A protective furniture cover can shelter a table and chairs while still being unsuitable as long-term cushion storage. Read our furniture cover guide if you are choosing a cover, and check separately what the cushion maker permits.

Dry the filling, not just the surface

Bring cushions into an appropriate sheltered space well before packing them away. Follow their cleaning instructions: removable covers, washing temperatures and filling care vary. Do not assume every cover can go in a washing machine simply because it has a zip.

Give the whole cushion time to dry, including seams, corners and thick filling. A cool, dry-feeling outer fabric does not establish that the centre is ready for storage. Avoid compressing a damp stack tightly into a bag or box; that makes inspection and drying harder.

Choose a dry, ventilated storage area consistent with the manufacturer’s advice. A leaking shed, damp garage corner or surface with condensation is not equivalent to suitable indoor storage. Keep cushions clear of damp floors and check periodically during the winter.

What a storage box can and cannot promise

For between-use storage, the Marvel+ has been convenient when the cushions fit without forcing the lid. I let the filling dry first and keep the box on a level spot. Its rain performance in my use does not override a cushion label that calls for dry indoor winter storage.

Keter describes its Marvel reference box as weather resistant with ventilation designed to help keep contents dry. That is a product feature, not a guarantee that damp cushions will dry inside it or that condensation is impossible. Opening a box in the rain can introduce water even when the closed lid sheds a shower.

For the verified Marvel+ 270L retailer listing, check Keter Marvel+ 270L on Amazon. Confirm the live product specification and care instructions for the exact variant. Keep the lid properly closed, avoid a location where water collects, and inspect stored contents after prolonged wet spells.

A stable base helps the lid and body sit as intended. Our plastic storage box base guide covers patio and paving checks. A level base still does not make a box a heated, humidity-controlled cupboard.

Pack for inspection, not the tightest possible fit

Let the whole cushion dry before storing it. Seams and thick filling can hold moisture after the surface feels ready, so do not compress a damp stack into a box and expect the box to finish the drying.

Once the cushions are dry, measure the stack in its natural shape. Leave room to lift it out easily and close the lid without forcing it. Internal depth and the opening matter more than a big capacity number; curved cushions and bulky backs do not pack like water.

Arrange the stack so you can inspect it. A box buried behind furniture until spring makes it harder to spot a small leak or damp patch early. Open it in dry weather, check the corners and underside of the bottom cushion, and change the arrangement if you find moisture.

The Marvel+ is useful when its size and the cushion instructions suit your routine. If those instructions call for indoor winter storage, use the outdoor box for the jobs it does suit.

Measure the cushions before buying a 270-litre box

The litre figure is poor shorthand for a bulky cushion set. You need usable internal length, depth and height, plus the opening and clearance beneath the lid. Measure the pads in their normal dry state, then allow space to lift them out without wedging them in.

Keter model 17202438 is a useful manufacturer reference, but measure your actual pads and confirm the dimensions of the selected retailer variant. A 50 × 50 cm cushion will not lie flat across an internal depth of 40 cm. Try the stack in its natural shape, allow for the lid and opening, and make sure you can lift it out without scraping or compressing it.

Before you put the cushions away

Read the care label, clean as directed, dry thoroughly and choose a suitable location. Store only when you are confident the filling is dry, then inspect the stack from time to time. If you notice damp, musty odour or visible mould, stop using that storage arrangement and follow the maker’s cleaning guidance.

check Keter Marvel+ 270L on Amazon for a convenient outdoor box when your cushion instructions allow it. For winter, the sensible purchase starts with what the cushions need rather than a promise on the box lid.
