For a sizeable patio, I like a surface-cleaner head for the open middle and a lance for the awkward edges. They do different parts of the same job, and using them together is usually more useful than expecting one attachment to reach everything.
I have used a Kärcher K 4 with the T 5 head this way. The covered head gives me a more even pass with less stray spray on nearby walls and plants, while the lance reaches the corners the round head leaves behind.
Before choosing either, check the paving and joints. I will explain where each attachment helps, how to work towards a tidy finish and when extra pressure is the wrong answer.

TogglePatio cleaner versus lance
On the open paving, I keep the surface head moving at a steady pace and overlap each pass. Then I switch to the lance for edges and steps. That last pass matters: a spotless centre with a dirty strip against the wall still looks unfinished.
| Tool | Where it works well | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Covered surface cleaner | Large, level areas; regular overlapping passes; reduced sideways spray | Cannot reach tight edges and may ride poorly over uneven paving |
| Adjustable fan lance | Edges, steps, vertical faces and controlled rinsing | Narrow path takes longer and inconsistent distance can leave stripes |
| Dirt blaster | Small stubborn deposits on robust material after a test | Concentrated rotating jet can damage joints or mark softer surfaces |

Why a surface cleaner gives a more even pass
A T-Racer style head encloses rotating flat jets beneath a hood. The fixed head geometry keeps the nozzles at a more consistent distance than a hand-held lance, while the cover contains much of the splash. Kärcher specifies the T 5 for large exterior surfaces and provides adjustable nozzle clearance for different materials. The current product number is 2.644-084.0.
That does not mean every pass cleans perfectly. Move at a steady pace and overlap slightly. If you rush heavy growth, the result can show arcs or lanes. If you dwell in one place, the concentrated action can expose aggregate, disturb weak pointing or create a visibly cleaner patch.
Use a lance where the round head cannot work
A round cleaner leaves an unwashed strip beside walls, steps and narrow returns. Use a fan lance at a conservative setting, angle the spray so debris travels away from doors and vents, and keep the nozzle moving. A lance is also the better diagnostic tool: start farther away and reduce the distance only after the surface and joints remain sound.
The Kärcher K 4 Power Control Flex listing includes a Vario Power spray lance and dirt blaster, with a stated maximum 130 bar and 420 litres per hour. These headline maxima do not prescribe the setting for a particular patio. The pressure control exists so the operator can reduce the intensity.

Plan the edges and the rinse water
Look at the patio as a whole before cleaning a bright patch in the middle. Note the doors, planted borders, drains and any loose jointing. Decide where you will collect the loosened material and where the remaining rinse water can safely go.
On sound paving, work the T 5 steadily across the open area with controlled overlap. A rushed pass can leave visible lanes. Then use the adjustable lance for the narrow strip beside a wall or step, keeping the nozzle moving and starting gently on a test area.
Check the finish once the test patch has dried. Wet paving can hide differences in colour and make it difficult to judge whether you are cleaning the surface or marking it. If more pressure starts disturbing the joints, stop and change the approach.
If you already own a compatible washer, the T 5 attachment may be the useful purchase. If you are starting from scratch, compare the K 4 and T 5 bundle with the complete separate cost. Check what is included so you do not buy a second head that is already in the box.
Compatibility checks before buying an attachment
- Exact washer family: Kärcher lists the T 5 for Home & Garden K 2–K 7 machines, but confirm the connector and model generation on the manufacturer page.
- Package contents: a “Home” kit may already include a surface cleaner. Read the listing contents instead of ordering a duplicate.
- Surface setting: the T 5 has adjustable nozzle distance. Begin with the gentler position on an inconspicuous patch.
- Hose reach: route the hose without pulling the washer across wet paving or creating a trip loop across the working path.
For an existing compatible machine, the T 5 accessory is the direct comparison. For a first purchase, price the K 4 Power Control Flex plus T 5 bundle against the washer-only K 4 package. Product bundles change, so verify the photographs and “what is included” section at checkout rather than relying on the word “Home” alone.
A safer cleaning sequence
- Sweep loose grit and lift furniture, pots and delicate ornaments.
- Inspect joints, cracks, drains and the bottom of doors. Repair loose material first.
- Test the lowest useful pressure in an inconspicuous corner and let it dry before judging colour.
- Clean the broad centre with overlapping surface-cleaner passes.
- Use the adjustable lance for edges, keeping a consistent distance and shallow angle.
- Collect loosened debris rather than washing it into drains. Plan where the remaining rinse water can go before starting; contain any chemical runoff and follow the treatment label.
Avoid aiming the jet at people, pets, electrical fittings, glazing seals or timber joints. Wear eye protection and closed footwear. Never use the jet to clean boots while wearing them. Follow the machine manual for electrical supply, extension leads and shutdown.
Where pressure washing is the wrong first step
Freshly laid or failing jointing, loose slabs, spalled concrete and visibly soft stone should be assessed before washing. Pressure can remove the symptom while worsening the construction. Likewise, black spots and deep biological staining may not disappear safely through more pressure alone. Use a surface-compatible treatment only when the paving supplier allows it, contain runoff and follow the label.
If you are also choosing hose capacity, our 12.5mm versus 19mm hose guide explains how to measure tap flow. For storing the supply neatly, see the wall-mounted versus ground-spike hose-box guide.
