Caravans and tents on grassy pitches at a UK campsite

For general grass pitches and amenity areas at a campsite, my go to choice is Hurrells HM4 — its ryegrass and fescue mix suits regular foot traffic on amenity grass. For installed grass-reinforcement grids, Hurrells HL9 is a good choice for the grid specification. Quiet ornamental areas may benefit from a different mixture.

A campsite has several kinds of wear: tents covering grass, people following the same routes, vehicle movements and dry or shaded patches. Consider separating those areas on a site plan in order to allocate the right seed for each area before working out how much seed you need.

HM4 combines 50% perennial ryegrass with 50% strong creeping red fescue. It gives ordinary pitches a different balance from HM2’s finer, non-rye turf or HL9’s grid mixture. If you want to understand how the ingredients work together, my guide to grass-seed mixtures and blends explains species percentages, cultivar choices and why the seed in the bag does not translate directly into the same proportions of established grass.

Best general-purpose starting point: HM4

HM4 is best for ordinary grass pitches, landscaped areas and repairs. It works for both new sowing and overseeding, so you can use the same mixture for worn pitches and bare repairs at the appropriate rate.

Perennial ryegrass helps the mixture establish relatively quickly and cope with regular foot traffic. It thickens mainly by producing new shoots, called tillers, around each plant. Strong creeping red fescue adds finer leaves and spreads through underground rhizomes. The rhizomes help fill small gaps; prepare and reseed larger bare patches.

Work out quantities for thin pitches and bare repairs separately before choosing the HM4 pack size; they need different sowing rates.

Choose a different mixture where the site needs it

A shaded pitch beside mature trees and an open, sunny lawn can need different treatment. Before buying enough seed for the whole park, note where grass has struggled and whether the cause is shade, dry soil, compaction or repeated wear. Seed choice can help with some of those pressures; waterlogging and damaged soil structure need attention as part of the renovation.

For quieter ornamental areas, HM2 offers a non-rye alternative. Its finer grasses make more sense around lightly used landscaping than on the busiest routes between pitches and facilities. The UK lawn grass-types guide compares the main species by wear, shade, drought and maintenance needs, which is useful when you are drawing up a specification for several different areas.

Keep the mixture, mowing height and available rest period on your site plan. The grounds team can then see where each bag belongs and order the same mixture for later repairs.

Grass pitches, vehicle routes and reinforcement grids

Vehicle loading is different from foot traffic. If wheels repeatedly rut wet ground, investigate the access route, drainage and surface construction. Repair the cause of the rutting before reseeding, or the wheels will damage it again.

HL9 is the Hurrells mixture to consider for an installed grass grid. Its current recipe includes 15% CSI Corsica ryegrass, 40% creeping red fescues, 30% SC1 tall fescue and 15% Chewings fescue. Match it to the grid manufacturer’s growing-medium and maintenance requirements, and keep vehicles off while the grass establishes.

Keep visitor paths and frequently used service points on the site map. A small change to circulation can reduce repeated damage to a narrow strip while leaving the rest of the grass pitch available.

Plan repairs around bookings and establishment

After a tent or groundsheet has covered a pitch, check what remains. Pale but living grass may recover differently from a bare patch where plants have died or been worn away. Decide whether the area needs rest, overseeding or more substantial preparation before choosing a rate.

Closing alternating pitches can be more practical than trying to renovate the entire site at once. Record how long each area can be kept free of tents, awnings and vehicle traffic. Keep the pitch closed until the new grass is firmly rooted and has enough cover to withstand use.

Autumn can be useful where warm soil and moisture coincide with fewer bookings. On an all-year site, staged work and local conditions may matter more than a fixed month. Block repaired pitches out of the booking system while they establish.

How much seed should a campsite order?

Measure the area to be treated, excluding hardstanding, buildings and unaffected ground. For HM4, Hurrells lists 20kg as covering 800m² for overseeding or 560m² for new sowing. A 6,000m² overseeding area therefore needs 150kg at that listed coverage: eight 20kg bags, with 10kg left over.

If that same 6,000m² is bare ground, HM4’s new-sowing coverage gives a requirement of about 214.3kg: eleven 20kg bags, with roughly 5.7kg left. Separating new sowing from overseeding makes a substantial difference to the order.

Example zoneArea and HM4 coverageRequired seed
General overseeding4,000m² at 800m² per 20kg100kg
Bare repairs, specified separately500m² at 560m² per 20kgAbout 17.9kg
Combined requirement if the same suitable product is usedNon-overlapping treatment areasAbout 117.9kg / six 20kg bags

This HM4 example leaves about 2.1kg from six bags. If the zones need different mixtures, round each product’s order separately. Our bulk seed buying guide explains the calculation and quote checks.

What to include when asking for a quote

Specify the use zones, soil and drainage concerns, maintained mowing height, irrigation access and booking constraints. Ask for the current recipe, bags required, delivered price and any proposed substitutions. Confirm delivery access before scheduling a large drop during a busy arrival day.

List Hurrells HM4 for ordinary grass pitches, Hurrells HL9 for suitable grid areas and Hurrells HM2 for quiet ornamental areas. The commercial grounds guide covers quieter ornamental areas, while our contractor guide helps organise repeat renovation orders.
