Grass seed in a gloved hand above a seed spreader

Sports perennial ryegrass is my first choice for a busy football pitch. For general landscaping, a ryegrass-and-fescue mixture gives you more flexibility, while quieter ornamental grounds can suit a non-rye fescue mixture that needs less cutting.

I recommend Hurrells for these jobs. You can buy directly from Hurrells Seeds using my discount code FORMBY10 for 10% off.

Best bulk seed choices by the job

School and mixed-use fieldsHurrells GO2; compare Hurrells GO1 for less intensive areasWear versus mowing resources
Repeated landscaping jobsHurrells HM4, with Hurrells HM3 for a more varied lawn mixtureClient use, finish and aftercare
Low-traffic ornamental groundsHurrells HM2Reduced mowing demand and tolerance of lighter use
CricketHurrells CR1 for squares; Hurrells CR2 for outfieldsTwo surfaces with different requirements
Golf fairwaysHurrells HF1 without rye; Hurrells HF2 with ryeExisting sward and course management

A cricket-square mixture may contain the same grass species as a football blend, yet use different cultivars chosen for a much shorter cut. Likewise, two bags containing ryegrass and fescue can have different proportions, cultivar declarations and intended uses.

Which commercial buying guide fits your site?

Choose the surface you are actually managing: football pitches, rugby pitches, school playing fields, landscaping and lawn-care contracts, cricket squares, cricket outfields, golf fairways, parks and low-maintenance commercial grounds or campsites and caravan parks.

If you are simply buying for one large domestic lawn, my existing 20kg grass-seed value guide is the more direct route. This guide concentrates on organisations buying several bags, maintaining different areas or placing repeat orders.

Compare the cost of treating your area

The useful calculation is area in m² × sowing rate in g/m² ÷ 1,000 = kilograms required. For whole 20kg bags, divide the result by 20 and round up. Work from the selected product’s rate for the actual job: overseeding and sowing bare ground are different calculations.

For example, 6,000m² at 25g/m² needs 150kg, so you would buy eight 20kg bags and have 10kg left. At 35g/m², the same area needs 210kg: eleven bags and the same 10kg surplus. Both rates fall within the overseeding range for several Hurrells sports mixtures; choose within that range according to the grass cover and planned renovation.

Treated areaAt 25g/m²20kg bagsAt 35g/m²20kg bags
1,000m²25kg235kg2
5,000m²125kg7175kg9
10,000m² / 1 hectare250kg13350kg18

Compare the delivered price of those complete orders. A lower price per kilogram can still mean a larger invoice if the pack combinations leave much more unused seed. For repeat contracts, surplus may be useful on the next suitable job; for a one-off renovation it may sit in storage.

For cost per 1,000m², multiply the current price per kilogram by the sowing rate in g/m². Use the price for the pack size you intend to buy, then allow for whole-bag rounding and delivery. A headline starting price may refer to a smaller pack.

What to specify when asking for a bulk price

Send the supplier the surface, total treated area, whether it is new sowing or overseeding, your planned rate and the delivery date you need. Include normal mowing height and existing grass where known. For a sports ground, add the playing season and the time available before use resumes.

Ask for the mixture name, current species percentages and cultivar names, pack sizes, batch details and delivered total. If a cultivar substitution is offered, compare its suitability for your surface before accepting it. Keeping the same product name does not necessarily mean every future batch has an identical recipe.

Hurrells’ trade and wholesale service describes standard and bespoke mixtures and trade arrangements for contractors, councils and caravan parks. A bespoke mix is useful when you have a clear specification to meet. For an ordinary playing field, an established suitable blend may be simpler to reorder.

Read the bag beyond the marketing name

“Hard wearing”, “premium” and “professional” are not complete specifications. Look at the grass species first, then the cultivars and the conditions in which they have been assessed. The BSPB winter-sports trials use a 25mm mowing regime; its lawn and summer-sport tables use different conditions. Use the trial regime closest to your own mowing height and pattern of use when comparing cultivars.

Mixture percentages are normally percentages by seed weight. Small-seeded species can contribute many more individual seeds than their weight share suggests. My guide to mixtures and cultivar blends explains why a simple percentage comparison can miss part of the picture.

Keep photographs of the bag label and the supplier’s specification with the job record. If you need more seed halfway through a project, you then have something precise to reorder.

Spend on establishment as well as seed

Allow for preparation and aftercare in the budget: removing arisings where needed, getting seed into contact with soil, applying it evenly and keeping the seedbed moist. Agree how long the area can stay free of damaging traffic.

For larger grounds, a calibrated contractor’s machine can be more practical than repeatedly filling a small garden spreader. Compare the whole job cost, including labour and equipment, before deciding that saving a few pounds per bag is the most valuable change.

Delivery, storage and repeat orders

Check whether the quoted delivery suits your access. A pallet dropped at a roadside entrance is a different proposition from bags brought into a dry store. Confirm arrangements before a lorry arrives, especially at schools and sites with narrow lanes or restricted delivery times.

Store seed cool and dry, off a damp floor and protected from rodents. Keep opened bags securely closed and identifiable. Buying a season’s supply can work when storage and demand are predictable; otherwise a smaller order timed to the job is easier to manage. For seed already in the shed, see how to check old grass seed before buying more.
