For a school field used heavily for PE, playtimes and team sport, I recommend Hurrells GO2 or a dedicated sports ryegrass blend. For less intensively used areas where the grounds team wants a finer finish and less rapid regrowth, Hurrells GO1 is worth comparing. You can order the two mixtures for different parts of the site.

ToggleBest choices for the different parts of a school field
| Use | Mixture to consider | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Busy mixed-use playing field | Hurrells GO2 | 70% perennial ryegrass for busy areas; needs more mowing than GO1 |
| Lighter-use general field | Hurrells GO1 | More fine fescue for lighter use and less frequent mowing |
| Intensively used football or rugby area | Hurrells FR3 | 100% sports perennial ryegrass, specified for pitch renovation |
GO2 contains 40% Beckham and 30% Turfgold perennial ryegrass, plus 30% Maxima strong creeping red fescue. GO1 contains 30% ryegrass, 60% red fescues, 5% smooth-stalked meadow-grass and 5% Highland bent. The larger ryegrass share in GO2 suits heavier wear; GO1 gives more room to the finer, slower-growing grasses.
The ryegrass in GO1 appears before the slower-establishing meadow-grass, so give the mixture time to develop. If you are buying against a formal specification, include the exact species and cultivar names, including the Highland bent, on the order.

Map the field by use before ordering
Mark the sports areas, general play space, entrances, tree shade and ornamental margins. The route between a classroom block and the field may receive far more concentrated traffic than a large area at the far end.
Prioritise grass that will cope with regular use in the play areas. Hurrells HM2 suits quieter ornamental lawn areas; it would struggle with the wear on a busy games field.
For a dedicated match area, the football-pitch guide or rugby-pitch guide offers a more focused comparison. Keep fine cricket-square work separate from the surrounding field as well.

Summer holidays give access, but not guaranteed growing conditions
The summer break is convenient for contractors, yet July and August can leave new seed short of water. Find out who can water and inspect the site when teaching staff are away. If the site is left unattended during a dry spell, the new seedlings can die before term starts.
Spring or early-autumn work may suit some areas better, depending on the local conditions and the school’s use of the field. Staging the work can preserve a usable area while another section establishes. Make that arrangement part of the plan before the contractor arrives.
Avoid setting a reopening date from a germination claim. Visible seedlings need time to root and form a sward. The person responsible for the grounds should assess cover and stability before the repaired section returns to its intended use.
Calculate the seed for the area being treated
For a 5,000m² school field, the Hurrells GO1 and GO2 overseeding range of 20–35g/m² produces these quantities:
| Rate | Kilograms | 20kg bags |
|---|---|---|
| 20g/m² | 100kg | 5 |
| 25g/m² | 125kg | 7 |
| 30g/m² | 150kg | 8 |
| 35g/m² | 175kg | 9 |
These are worked alternatives within the published range. Choose the rate for the condition of the sward and the renovation plan. A bare repair zone uses the appropriate new-sowing specification instead; both GO1 and GO2 list 35–70g/m² for that job.
If only half the field is being treated, use that half in the calculation. Measure entrances and worn patches separately if they need a different rate. Our grass-seed quantity guide gives the formula, while the commercial bulk buying guide explains whole-bag costs and surplus.
Compare the maintenance cost as well as the seed invoice
Compare the current GO1 and GO2 prices at Hurrells for the number of bags you need. On quieter ground, GO1’s slower regrowth is useful where cutting time is limited.
Ask how often the field can actually be cut and what equipment is available. A fast-growing mix may be useful for recovery but need more frequent mowing during active growth. Include mowing labour and machinery in the annual budget, alongside the seed.
Where a contractor proposes an alternative, request the recipe and the maintained mowing range rather than accepting “equivalent sports mix” as the full description.

Give the contractor a clear brief
Include the measured area, present problems, intended activities, normal cut, irrigation access, site-access arrangements and available closure period. Ask the quotation to separate preparation, seed, application and aftercare responsibilities. This makes competing quotations easier to compare and reduces the chance that everyone assumes somebody else will water.
For an existing field, retain useful living cover where the renovation approach allows. The GMA’s renovation guidance is useful background on matching work to water and rest resources.
Label the order by area: Hurrells GO2 for a busy general field, Hurrells FR3 for an intensive winter-sports area, and Hurrells GO1 for a lighter-use field. Keep the quantities and mixtures separated on the order so the right bags reach the right part of the site.
